Time to Retire
You wouldn’t imagine a new trailer tyre shredding after just a few hundred miles but as they are cheap rubbish made in China what can you expect?
Fortunately we were close to an off ramp and Lorna managed to get the trailer off the main freeway. The choice was to call out the breakdown people or fix it ourselves. The cheaper but more dangerous option was to fix it ourselves so after donning our hi-vis jackets and deploying every warning triangle that we had we got on with the job. Why is there never a policeman around when you want one? I’m sure had we stopped on the freeway to have a picnic we’d have been surrounded in no time by gun toting very exciteable cops screaming at us to drop our sandwiches and lay on the ground.
Happily the highlights of our travels outweigh the lows. I mean, how many people can say they have stood next to a moose having a pee in a public loo? I’m reliably informed there was also a female moose in the ladies room. We came upon these intriguing characters after walking across Rainbow Bridge from the USA in to Canada at Niagara Falls. The male moose appears to be chained to the urinal. Now who would try and steal a huge stuffed moose, or a urinal for that matter?
We thought Niagara Falls, the collective name for the three falls, American Falls, Horseshoe Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, is best seen in the evening as the lights come on.
For the best overview you need to be in Canada, which we did by simply walking across Rainbow Bridge and through Canadian customs. The officer was rather concerned that he couldn’t find the valid stamp in our passport which would allow us back in to the USA. He wasn’t going to let us in until he was sure that we had the correct stamp otherwise the USA Customs and Border Patrol wouldn’t let us return to the USA!
How can you circle the globe in a matter of seconds? By visiting the huge Delorme map publishing company in Freeport, USA of course. It was the desire of Mr Delorme to have the largest rotating globe in the world, so he had one built. He also had to have the building constructed to accommodate the globe which is recorded in the Guiness Book of Records at 41.5ft/12.64mtr.
Our circumnavigation of the USA is still continuing, we’re not sure if we are going to make it before running out of time. See our route here. Map and Track
